Client Issues

Most of our clients are young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 (or parents of this age group). First and foremost, we understand that this client population wants a therapist who is respectful, non-judgmental, and validating about their challenges in life (but also a therapist who doesn't "just validate"). Many of our clients have experienced difficulties finding a therapist with whom they feel safe due to a lack of "fit". Some have felt invalidated by people in their lives who have judged or "normalized" their issues. Some are confused about what is causing their "I just don't feel right" sensations. Our experience with young adults makes us sensitive to these issues and our style embodies collaboration with our clients to show respect for their preferences, values, diversity, and capacity to make their own decisions in life.

Treatment Approach

We weave coping strategies and skill development into our therapeutic interventions to help clients improve distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindful observation of inner experiences. Our clients have experienced increased self-awareness about who they are, what they want, why they are struggling, and how they can make positive changes. We explore their strengths, core values, and the previous life experiences that influence current-day thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Please see individual therapist descriptions below for more details.

Client Approach
Karen's primarily uses a DBT-informed treatment approach. DBT is Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based treatment modality for people who struggle with emotion dysregulation, distress intolerance, and relationships--all of which typically manifest in behaviours such as emotional outbursts and/or numbing of emotions, substance abuse (and/or other addictions), avoidance, disordered eating, self-harm, in addition to problematic self-critical thoughts, anxiety, and strained interpersonal relationships. Karen also works with clients experiencing symptoms related to ADHD, depression, burn-out, complex trauma, lack of purpose/meaning, and low self-esteem. Karen often supplements her treatment strategies by drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Motivational Interviewing, and Parts Theory (Internal Family Systems-IFS).
Fees
Karen offers virtual psychotherapy sessions, 50-60 minutes in duration (depending on in-the-moment needs), over a video software platform that is compliant with privacy and personal information protection laws. Session fees are $150 (no taxes applicable).
